Seminar: Dr. John Attia –“Low-Cost Portable Instrumentation System for Engaging Students through Hands-on Learning”
Dr. John Attia
TITLE: Low-Cost Portable Instrumentation System for Engaging Students through Hands-on Learning
DATE OF SEMINAR: March 12 (Thursday), 2015
LOCATION: 3rd floor conference room in the Electrical Engineering Building
TIME: 1:00PM – 2:00PM
ABSTRACT:
Due to advancement in technology made possible through increasing miniaturization of integrated circuits, several portable instrumentation systems are now available. Low-cost portable electronic instrumentation systems, which allow students to test their ideas anywhere and anytime, will have significant influence on engineering education by inspiring students to be creative and become highly engaged in their learning.
One of the low-cost electronic instrumentation systems is the Analog Discovery Platform. This talk will introduce the attendees to the Analog Discovery Module, Waveforms, and Electronic Parts Kits. In addition, attendees will become knowledgeable about how hands-on experiential learning is being introduced into the electrical and computer engineering curriculum at PVAMU. Furthermore, the attendees will see examples of hands-on experiments that have been performed by electrical and computer engineering students.
SHORT BIO OF THE PRESENTER:
Dr. John Okyere Attia is Professor of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Prairie View A&M University. He was the Head of the aforementioned Department from 1997 to 2013. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the field of Electronics, Circuit Analysis, Instrumentation Systems, Digital Signal Processing and VLSI Design. In addition, Dr. Attia has worked briefly at AT&T Bell Laboratories and 3M.
Dr. Attia earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Houston, an M.S. from University of Toronto and B.S. from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. Dr. Attia has over 70 publications. Dr. Attia is the author of the CRC books, Electronics and Circuits Analysis Using MATLAB (2nd Edition), and PSPICE and MATLAB for Electronics: An Integrated Approach (2nd Edition). His research interests include innovative electronic circuit designs for radiation environment, radiation testing, power electronics for renewal energy systems, and signal processing.
Dr. Attia has received several awards and honors. He has twice received outstanding Teaching Awards. He is a member of the following honor societies: Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Kappa Alpha Kappa and Eta Kappa Nu. In addition, Dr. Attia is an ABET program evaluator for Electrical and Computer Engineering programs. Furthermore, he is the Chair of the Mentoring Subcommittee of the IEEE Committee for Engineering Accreditation Activities. Moreover, Dr. Attia is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.

Today’s military analysts are faced with the monumental and escalating task of handling massive volumes of complex data from multiple sources. To enhance their ability to more effectively and efficiently process data, a multidisciplinary team of researchers from Prairie View A&M University plan to establish Center of excellence in Research and Education for big military Data InTelligence (CREDIT). The center’s mission is to accelerate research and education in predictive analytics for science and engineering to transform our ability to effectively address and solve many complex problems posed by big data. The center will bring together sensing, perception, and decision support for mission-critical applications of DoD. The proposed center will build partnerships with DoD labs, government agencies and business to focus on research data analysis and educating and training students to become data scientists and engineers in the future data-centric economy and contribute to DoD missions.
